BROKEN TREE BRANCHES & DOWNED POWER LINES
Saturday, February 04, 2012
|
|
BROKEN TREE BRANCHES & DOWNED POWER LINES:
Denver Forestry and Xcel Energy offer the following advice when dealing with snow-laden branches on trees and fallen branches and/or power lines:
• Check to make sure the tree is safe and clear of all utility lines prior to removing snow; do not attempt to shake snow off of a tree if a utility line is going through it.
• If the tree is clear of utility lines, using a broom, remove as much snow as possible from branches.
• Do not attempt to climb tree or use ladder to reach higher limbs.
• Sometimes branches heavy with snow take down power lines/cables. Stay clear of downed lines and report them immediately to Xcel Energy at 1-800-895-1999. If a power line has fallen onto a vehicle, stay away from the vehicle. Seek help immediately by calling 911.
• If a tree limb is broken on a public right-of-way, citizens are asked to contact Denver forestry to assess damage and tree safety. For trees on private property, citizens can visit www.denvergov.org/forestry for a list of licensed and insured tree care contractors.

Holiday Safety Tips
While I would rather start this holiday newsletter with more joyous articles (and we do have some), I first need to remind you to be vigilant during the holiday season. As a proactive measure, I would encourage you to be alert to strange cars and strangers in general in your neighborhood. If either concerns you, please call the non-emergency police number at 720-913-2900. While the police may not respond immediately, your call will guarantee a drive-by from DPD. In light of these break-ins, below is a list of extra precautions recommended by the Denver Police Department to help keep your home and neighborhood safe during the holidays and all-year round.

Portolets and Restrooms:
Year Round Portolets – We have portolet service in all of our regional parks; City Park, Cheesman, Washington, Ruby Hill, Sloan’s, Berkeley, Civic Center, Skate Park, Central Park, and Lowry Sports Complex Typically those units are cleaned once a day seven days a week. Some of these parks also have restrooms open year round.
Seasonal Portolets (March 1 – October 31 high-use season) – We deploy units to all the athletic permitted fields and begin to deploy at other permit/picnic sites. Most of the neighborhood parks with portolets have the units cleaned Mon, Wed, and Friday, and community parks Monday - Friday. We remove most of the neighborhood and community park units after the permit season on Nov 1, due to reduced use and available budget.

Support Art, Music and Physical Activity in the Denver Public Schools
Jacqui Shumway for DPS School Board at Large
Many of you already know me. I have been active in promoting healthy lifestyles in the community for many years. I am running for the At Large position on the DPS School Board because I believe that the schools cannot sit idly by while one third of our children become diabetic, from a lack of physical activity.
Art, Music and Physical Activity are proven techniques that improve academic performance. In the race to please all the special interest groups, I worry that the health and well being of our children is being cut from the curriculum.

History Colorado and Slow Food Denver partner to get volunteers picking Denver’s
fruit trees and vines for the Gleaning of Denver project
DENVER — The Denver metro area boasts abundant fruit trees and vines located in yards, alleys and public areas, yet much of this fruit is never harvested and often left to rot. There is a process to harvest unused produce, called gleaning. History Colorado and Slow Food Denver have partnered to begin the Gleaning of Denver project. This gleaning project provides community members with an opportunity to pick fruit and learn how to process it. With many of Denver’s fruit trees and vines planted by original home owners, and the project is a fun way to tap into Denver history and today’s desire to eat local.

District 8 Councilwoman Carla Madison Passes on.
Wednesday, April 06, 2011
|
|
Colfax Avenue and Colfax on the Hill lost a dear friend and champion with the passing of our beloved District 8 City Councilwoman Carla Madison April 6, 2011. There will be many tributes and remembrances coming from her legion of friends and colleagues. Here’s one from Colfax. When the chronicle and history of Colfax Avenue’s return to becoming again one of America’s Great Streets is recorded, the name Carla Madison will appear there many times over. Carla and Colfax were metaphors for one another: Eclectic. Authentic. Forgiving. Gritty. Humorous. Fun. Her great love affair with Denver was exceeded only by the one for her husband, Paul Weiss. Carla, we always saw the light within you that never failed to brighten our day and space and time. That will never go away. It is your legacy.

FEDS: House Passes Spending Bill With Deep Cuts -PBS
Monday, February 21, 2011
|
|
Updated 7:15 a.m. ET Saturday:
The House approved a spending plan early Saturday morning that would cut $60 billion in domestic programs, foreign funding and some military projects.
The 235-189 passage marked a success for fiscally conservative Republicans and sets up a budget battle with President Obama and Senate Democrats next month. No House Democrats voted in favor of the spending plan, and three Republicans voted with Democrats against it. (View the roll call vote results.)
The possibility of a federal government shutdown hangs over the process. If the two chambers can't agree on federal funding levels by March 4 -- when the current funding resolution expires -- they will have to pass another short-term spending measure as a stopgap to keep the government running.

Rep. Beth McCann: Restoring the Dome and Other News from the Capitol
Monday, February 14, 2011
|
|
Dear Friends and Neighbors,
The legislative session is getting busy. But before I delve into the latest happenings under the Dome I would like to take a moment to discuss the current state of... well, the Dome itself. Those of you who have had the chance to visit the Capitol know what a remarkable building it is, and those of us in the legislature are truly privileged to work under the historic and iconic gold Dome.
As is the case with all historic buildings, the Colorado State Capitol requires periodic maintenance and renovation. This month the Capitol restoration project will begin work on restoring the Dome, which has fallen into disrepair caused by years of water and weather damage. In partnership with the State Historical Fund a restoration campaign called Share in the Care Colorado has been established by the non-profit Colorado Preservation, Inc. to raise the funds necessary for the renovation project.

Dear Friends and Neighbors;
Thank you to all of you who supported me in my bid for the Senate 32 seat. At the vacancy committee meeting last night, Irene Aguilar from House District 1 in southwest Denver was elected to replace Chris Romer in that Senate seat. She is a doctor who has been active in Health Care for All Colorado and will serve the district well. I wish her great success.
Thank you to so many of you who helped in my effort. I can't tell you how much the support means to me. I really enjoyed getting to know members of the vacancy committee throughout the district during this process. It is inspiring to see how many active and engaged Democrats there are throughout the district.
I look forward to continuing to represent my beloved House District 8 in the House and to working with you in the coming session. I am excited about some bills I am working on for this year and would love to hear from you if you have issues you would like to discuss.

KUSA - After a winter of indoor spin classes, many cyclists are surprised when they get back on the road to find how sore their abs feel after the first ride or two. That isn't a problem for those who spin on a Real Ryder.
For the latest Wargin's workout, Chris Lindley, trainer and owner of Qi Ryder, brought in two Real Ryders to show viewers how similar these stationary bikes are to an outdoor bike. The bikes move left and right to simulate an actual bike and core muscles get quite the workout!

The map also includes tips for sharing the road when biking on Denver City streets and how best to avoid injuries when bicycling, specifically in “The Door Zone,” the area along the side of a parked car where an opening door can hit and injure a cyclist. Instructions regarding hand signals and new bike laws are illustrated on the map, and a section of the map is dedicated to understanding how to use RTD Bike-n-Ride and Bike-on-Light Rail.
The 2010 Denver Bike Map is printed on water resistant paper, so it’s easy to use when on the go.

Boot camp, Qi Athletic Club Chris Lindley (Photo by Kathryn Scott Osler, The Denver Post )
"Hey, this is your workout." It's a phrase we hear at least once per gym class, serving as a reminder that we'll only get out of it as much as we put into it.
And yet — as in any classroom — the amount we put into it largely depends on the instructor and his or her teaching ability: to explain moves efficiently, to set a rhythm, to motivate newbies and buffs alike with energy and empathy.
Lucky for us that Denver — as one of the nation's fittest cities — has more than its share of pros whose flair for inspiring commitment and loyalty puts them in a class by themselves. We tracked down five of the city's most sought-after instructors to discover what makes them kick.

Lost Lake Lounge moves into former Bulldog Bar space
Sunday, April 11, 2010
|
|
For now, the sign next to the Bulldog Bar's door reads, "Bar Closed. Remember the Alamo!" While the sign's a nod to the bar's earlier incarnation, Mr. Von's Alamo, the bar at 3602 East Colfax Avenue is slated to re-open next Friday, March 5 as the Lost Lake Lounge. Matt LaBarge, co-owner of the popular South Broadway spots hi-dive and Sputnik, is turning the former Bulldog space into something of a cabin-styled lounge since that's what the place is set up for. "I'm just kind of loosely following what's already there," says LaBarge of the space, which has a wood interior and a wood-burning fireplace.

All across the city, park turf is showing wear in areas where dogs play off-leash. So, heads up to dogs and folks in Cheesman or Congress Parks!

Neighbors Step Up to Support Colfax Merchants
Saturday, January 10, 2009
|
|
Realizing the steep economic downturn can pose dire consequences for local businesses on East Colfax, neighborhood organizations Capitol Hill United Neighborhoods (CHUN) and South City Park Neighborhood Association (SCPNA) have joined with Colfax on the Hill, Inc. to sponsor a series of promotions and events to support local businesses in the 40-block Colfax on the Hill district (Broadway to Colorado Blvd.) “Our local merchants and entrepreneurs have brought new vitality and diversity to East Colfax and offer many new services to the community. All of us who are their beneficiaries want them to know we’re here to help out any way we can during these difficult times,” said Colfax on the Hill President Andy Baldyga. In short, “Think Globally, Shop Colfax.”

Sidewalk Snow Removal Policy Reminder
Thursday, January 08, 2009
|
|
Denver requires that businesses and residential homes remove snow from adjacent sidewalks. This includes the City when the City is the adjacent property owner, i.e. public office buildings such as the Webb building and the City & County building.
After the snow stops falling, compliance is required within 4 hours for a business or commercial property and 24 hours for residential properties. Remember that despite initial efforts to remove snow and ice from sidewalks, daytime temperatures often cause adjacent snow to partially melt, creating puddles on sidewalks that later freeze. It may help to place common ice melts products, cat litter or sand on icy spots to provide traction. This time limit can be modified by the Manager of Public Works to accommodate extreme situations.
To report an icy sidewalk hazard, please call Neighborhood Inspection Services at 3-1-1 or report online by clicking here.

Digital TV Transition – What You Need to Know
Thursday, January 08, 2009
|
|
Digital television promises a clearer viewing experience with higher definition pictures, more channels, and availability of additional spectrum for wireless communications and public safety purposes. But many people and local governments are still seeing a snowy picture regarding how the conversion from the current analog television system to digital will work. The transition, simply put, marks the end of television transmissions in an analog format and the beginning of digital-only signals across the United States.
When does this all happen? Currently a large percentage of TV stations broadcast in analog (standard definition), digital (standard definition) and HDTV (high definition). The federal government has made a mandatory cutover date of February 17, 2009 when all stations (except low power) must broadcast in digital and HDTV only.

Colfax Streetscape Project
Denver is in the process of installing new pedestrian lamp posts along both sides of Colfax Avenue between Franklin and Downing Streets. The concrete and electrical work will take approximately four to five weeks, with the custom lamp posts to be installed when they are received. Delivery of the lamps is anticipated in 8 – 12 weeks. District 10 lobbied long and hard with CBID for this project and on the placement of the lights and we am so excited to see this project being completed!
Thanks to CBID and our City Council!! It shows what a BID can do for our community.

BOTTLE SHOCK ON COLFAX
New Icon Heralds The Revitalization of Capitol Hill, Delights Downtown Commuters and
Piques The Interest of Denver Wine Enthusiasts
November 11, 2008 (DENVER). It wasn’t so long ago that Playboy magazine labeled Colfax "the longest, wickedest street in America,” but one of the street’s most established and respected businesses knows that this infamous artery is as important to downtown Denver’s future as its past.
Family owned Argonaut Wine & Liquor could have erected its classic new 40,000 sq. ft. architectural beauty anywhere in Denver, but chose to stay on the same block of East Colfax where Lazer Robinson with sons Hank and Jack Robinson started the business in 1965. “Argonaut is a Colfax institution, and who is more qualified to kick-start the revitalization of this particular stretch of Colfax than a 40-year community establishment?” states Ron Vaughn co-owner, and son-in-law of founder Hank Robinson.

CITY PARK UPDATE: “GAME ON!!”
Tuesday, July 08, 2008
|
|
If you’ve walked through City Park lately (or almost
anytime in the past decade) you’re probably disappoint-
ed, discouraged, frustrated, or even outraged at the con-
ditions you encounter. Dying grass, weed infestations,
non-functioning lights, dirty tennis courts, weeds in
the horseshoe pits, goose dung, mud and debris on the
pavement, and water features that either don’t work or
are rarely operating are symptoms of a very sick piece
of public property--property that has been entrusted to
city employees to manage for the enjoyment and benefit
of the citizens. Have I mentioned Ferril Lake? Are you
enjoying your park, citizens?

CITY PARK UPDATE - Ferril Lake
Thursday, June 05, 2008
|
|
Ferril Lake
Unfortunately Ferril Lake has been overcome with an extensive outbreak of algae growth. High nutrient levels in the lake water combined with warming temperatures probably caused the algal bloom. Park staff, in coordination with Denver Environmental Health Department, has developed a treatment plan to address the problem. Teri Henry, City Park Operations Supervisor, is certified to apply the recommended chemical treatments and started the treatments last week. The procedure has limitations since it takes several days to apply the solution over the 24 acre lake. Multiple applications may be necessary to control the extensive growth. The procedure also requires time between treatments to avoid adversely impacting wildlife and other desirable organisms. Park staff is looking into options to rake the algae off the lake surface and dispose it if the chemical treatments don’t prove effective. While we are hopeful there will be improvement by the weekend, there is not a predictable timeframe for when the algae can be significantly cleared from the lake...

People are passionate about Colfax Avenue
Wednesday, May 21, 2008
|
|
Taj Moore has only lived in Denver for a year, but he's already fallen in love.
"I fell in love with Colfax immediately," said Moore.
Even though the object of his affection is a street, it has a complexity of character that rivals any human's.
"There's so many dimensions to what makes the Colfax experience," he said.
Spend any evening on Colfax Avenue and it's easy to see those dimensions in action. From rowdy concert-goers to sophisticated art connoisseurs, Colfax attracts them all.
It's that diversity that Moore finds alluring.
"Colfax is a great mixing place - you have such a diversity of people. You find a lot of the romanticism of what people think America is and was right here on Colfax. You have the high culture and the low culture and everything in between," he said.
Moore wishes others would see Colfax the way he does.
"Not enough people know what this is about, not enough people appreciate it," he said.
Go watch the incredible video about Colfax here.

The Colfax Marathon Goes Off-Course
Thursday, May 08, 2008
|
 |
Why is this race skipping the best stretch of this street?
"... Morreale is one reason why that part looks so good, says Don Novak, the creator of MyColfax.org and a major promoter of the street. Two years ago, when he shared his vision for Colfax, "Jesse was throwing me out of his office," Novak remembers. But they both persevered, and when Novak heard that the route was changing again, he made lemonade out of lemons. Specifically, he organized Marathon Month, which will run from May 17 to June 8 and include a Colfax Scavenger Hunt on May 24 (kids from 1 to 4 p.m., adults from 8 p.m. to midnight) and the Colfax Stomp on May 31, a many-block party that will stretch from Vine to Marion streets. He's also created the Colfax Passport, which you can punch at Colfax businesses while you're enjoying the festivities, then take to the People's Fair for a free T-shirt..."

Welcome to the new MyColfax.org
Tuesday, April 29, 2008
|
|
Hello and thank you for visiting the MyColfax.org site. We are the sum of many businesses on our common ground, Colfax Avenue. We have built this site to help bring you the neighbor to our businesses on Colfax. To entice you to do so we have an excellent line up of events and block parties from now until the People's Fair. Please check the events for details. Also, we have the My Colfax Card. The card is free and you can receive it by simply signing up on this site. We have great plans for this site and Colfax. Many people have been working on the Colfax Community for a long time. There are a great number of stories to be told and good times to be had. We would like to both collect and share these stories and the best way to do this is via the web. So, we will continue to add the social extensions that will help us all come together in any and all ways possible.
We look forward to seeing you everywhere on Colfax. Thank you for using your My Colfax Card. It is brought to you in gratitude by your favorite businesses on, yes Colfax Avenue.
