She had followed me through the front door. Her business was much different than mine.
She was maybe 27 years old; in these places it is always difficult to tell. And all she wanted, she told the woman behind the reception desk, was one diaper.
Told that all they had was a size 6, the woman hesitated only briefly. She would take it, gladly.
“Anything has to be better,” she told the receptionist, “than a rag and a plastic bag.”
Now multiply this woman by 939, and what should emerge is a pretty good picture of who, during an average month these days, comes through the front door of Denver Urban Ministries, 1717 E. Colfax Ave.
For DenUM, as workers here shorthand the name, Season to Share is a very appropriately named time of the year. More than anytime in its 27-year history, the organization is in need of substantial help to assist the homeless and working poor living among us.
